Lead is present in tap water as a result of dissolution from natural sources or from household plumbing systems containing lead in pipes, solders or service connections to homes. It is a cumulative poison that affects the central nervous system. Lead has been classified as a possible carcinogen to humans even at low level. Health Canada has established a maximum acceptable concentration of 0.010 mg/L.
