Calcium in water supplies results from the dissolution of limestone, dolomite and other calcium containing mineral deposits. Low concentrations of calcium carbonate help to prevent corrosion of metal pipes by forming a protective coating. However, high levels of dissolved calcium can form scale in boilers, pipes and on cooking utensils. Calcium is a major contributor to total hardness of water. There is no aesthetic objective or maximum acceptable concentration established for calcium in drinking water (Refer to Total Hardness).
