Arsenic is distributed through earth crust and is present in trace amount in all living matter. Arsenic is also widely used commercially and industrially. It is introduced into water through the dissolution of minerals and ores, from industrial effluents and via atmospheric deposition.

Arsenic is a known carcinogen to humans.

The Saskatchewan Drinking Water Quality Standards and Objectives for arsenic in drinking water has set an interim maximum acceptable concentration of 0.025 mg/L.
