Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness, disability and premature death in Canada. Smoking is a major contributing factor to a number of chronic diseases and deaths. Second hand smoke (environmental tobacco smoke) can cause serious health concerns for children and all non-smokers in our communities.

The Ministry of Health is responsible for developing and amending The Tobacco Control Act and The Tobacco Control Regulations. The goal of this legislation is to reduce youth access to tobacco products and protect Saskatchewan residents from the harms associated with environmental tobacco smoke.

The Act was first put into place in 2002 and has since been amended, most significantly in 2005 and 2010. Laws within The Tobacco Control Act include a ban on smoking in enclosed public places, in cars with children under the age of 16 present, around doorways, windows and air intakes of public buildings, a ban on tobacco use on school grounds, and a number of restrictions on the sale and advertising of tobacco products.

This legislation is enforced throughout the province by Tobacco Enforcement Officers. A summary of the penalties associated with tobacco-related offences is located in the related documents section.

Copies of The Tobacco Control Act and The Tobacco Control Regulations are available on the Saskatchewan Queen's Printer Website.

Information on how this legislation affects your community, school or workplace can be found within the related links below.

There is other provincial legislation in place within other Acts including a workplace smoking ban within The Occupational Health and Safety Act and legislation related to the taxing of tobacco products within The Tobacco Tax Act.
