Saskatchewan View and Vote

The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to reducing the negative impact of tobacco use and is pleased to offer this innovative way to reach young people and encourage them to think critically about tobacco use.

View and Vote gives students in grades 6 to 12 a chance to view some of the world's best tobacco prevention television advertising. The ads are a tool to generate student discussions about the effects of tobacco use. Students voted for the ad that they felt would keep them from starting to use tobacco, or if they currently use tobacco, the ad that made them think about quitting.

Through voting, students are engaged in determining the messaging that will be used provincially to discourage tobacco use. View and Vote has been offered every two years since 2006. It also can be used to support and link to the appropriate curricular outcomes and indicators within the Saskatchewan Renewed Health Education Curricula.

Through View and Vote 4, Saskatchewan students voted "Doesn't Kill" as the most effective ad. The ad will continue to be aired online and at cinemas across the province throughout March and April 2012.

This year's View and Vote was launched on January 1, 2012 and voting wrapped up on February 29, 2012. Participating teachers had the opportunity to win one of three $500 classroom prizes to support comprehensive school community health. We are very happy to congratulate the following winning classrooms:
- Ms. Michelle Carline's grade 6/7 class at Empire Community School in Moose Jaw, SK;
- Mr. Stephen Davidson's grade 11 class at Sturgeon Lake Central School in Sturgeon, SK; and
- Mr. Greg Mamer's grade 7-12 classes at McLurg High School in Wilkie, SK.

The FAQs will help you to understand what the tobacco school ban means, what facilities are impacted, why the ban is important, and where you can go if you need more information on how it impacts schools and community.
