Certain nutrients such as calcium, protein, iron and folic acid have special importance during pregnancy. They are needed in greater amounts during pregnancy.

A. Calcium:  for building strong bones and teeth for baby.1. Dried beans, peas, liver, nuts, peanut butter, oranges and other citrus fruits, spinach and other dark-colored vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals.
B. Protein:  for the growth of all cells, including bones, muscles and blood vessels2. Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, and milk, dried beans, peas and lentils.

You have special nutrient needs if you are under 18 years of age, older than 35 years, expecting twins or on a special diet for medical reasons. You also require extra nutrients if there is less than 24 months between your pregnancies. Consult your public health nutritionist or dietitian for more information.
