Many factors affect the risk of developing gambling problems. The risks vary for each individual. However, individuals increase their risks if they gamble:
  • To escape loneliness, depression or boredom;
  • To make money;
  • To deal with pain from illness or the loss of a loved one;
  • As their only form of entertainment.

When gambling is more frequent than the occasional outing, it can create personal or family problems. The consequences include:

  • Missing important family/social events;
  • Loss of financial security;
  • Strained family relationships;
  • Loss of self-worth, pride and dignity;
  • Depression or thoughts of suicide.
