What do I look for when I visit the personal care home?

  • Ask to see the licence. It must be posted. Be sure to read everything on the licence.
  • Talk to the licensee, staff and residents about the care services provided such as staff coverage, recreation activities and transportation.
  • Tell the operator what your care needs are. Ask the operator about how they can be met.
  • Ask about experience and training of the operator and staff.
  • Ask if residents are encouraged to do things they like to do around the home such as tidying their room.
  • Talk about how much money you will pay to live in the home and what you will receive in return.
  • Ask to see the menu plan. If you need a special diet, can it be served?
  • Ask to see a copy of the residents’ rights and privileges. Ask about the rules of the home.
  • See if there is enough space in the home to meet your requirements.
