Saskatchewan! Healthy people. A healthy province.

Out-of-Canada Hospital Services

If you receive services outside Canada, you will usually find the cost much higher than in Saskatchewan. If the cost is higher, you will be responsible for paying the difference between the full amount charged and the amount Saskatchewan Health pays. For this reason, you should buy additional health insurance if you plan to travel outside Canada.

Saskatchewan Health does not cover cancer treatment provided outside of Canada unless the services have been approved by the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

  • Emergency Hospital Services - Saskatchewan Health provides limited coverage for emergency medical care from approved general hospitals outside Canada if the same services would be covered in Saskatchewan.

    Saskatchewan Health will pay:
    -  up to $100 per day (Canadian) for inpatient services
    -  up to $50 (Canadian) for an outpatient hospital visit. Saskatchewan Health will not
pay for more than two visits in any one day.
  • Emergency Psychiatric Services - Saskatchewan Health provides coverage for a brief period of stabilization (about five to seven days), both out-of-province and out-of-Canada.
  • Elective Hospital Services - Saskatchewan Health does not normally cover these services. You need our prior approval.
