Making healthy choices is important especially now that you are pregnant. We want to help you look at your present lifestyle habits and to make choices that are the best for you and your growing baby.

There are some very important things you can do to give your baby the best start in life. Begin by answering the following questions about your lifestyle.

1. Do you eat often throughout the day?

If you go without food, your baby does too! When you are pregnant, be sure to eat something every two to three hours. Be sure to have a good breakfast and a bedtime snack.

2. Do you drink regular coffee, tea, or cola drinks? (These beverages contain caffeine).

Caffeine in large amounts is not considered safe for your unborn baby. If you have more than two cups of strong coffee per day, try switching to water, milk or juices. Decaffeinated coffee, weak tea, hot cocoa or chocolate milk are other choices lower in caffeine.

Be careful if you use herbal teas. Some herbal teas can be harmful to you or your baby. Check with your local health nutritionist or nurse.

3. Do you drink enough fluid?

Fluids are important. Our bodies are made up of 50 to 60 per cent water. Choose water, unsweetened fruit juices, soup or milk. Fluids help to prevent constipation. You need at least six to eight 250 mL (8oz.) glasses daily.

4. Are you physically active?

Keeping active offers you many benefits. It makes labour and delivery easier and may speed your recovery after your baby is born. Regular physical activity can help prevent constipation, backaches, varicose veins and excess weight gain.

Pregnancy is not a good time to start a new physical activity. Activities that your body is already used to may be continued.
