Submissions must be made by September 30, 2008. The topic of “corporate governance” is not restricted to commercial enterprises, and applies to public sector organizations as well. Defined, “corporate governance” is the structure and processes by which organizations are directed, controlled and held to account. It encompasses such things as: who is in charge, who sets direction, who makes decisions, who monitors progress and who is accountable for the organization’s performance. Effective governance is translated into a strong, well-run organization that achieves peak performance and is accountable to the public it serves. In the context of Saskatchewan’s health system, Regional Health Authorities (RHAs) and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) work hard to ensure a delivery of care to Saskatchewan residents. The boards of RHAs and the SCA play a key role in the governance of the health system. In particular, the boards visibly promote to the community the commitment to stewardship and to ensuring high quality health care for the people of Saskatchewan. To assist boards in their governance function, a list of resources, templates and tools have been developed by the Governance Committee and Saskatchewan Health. The material is not intended to be prescriptive; each board is different and what may work for one board may not necessarily work for another. Boards are encouraged to adapt and use these documents to suit their organization.
