Starting July 1, 2008, seniors who have successfully applied for the new Seniors' Drug Plan will have their approved drug costs capped at $15 per prescription.

It is useful to stock an "emergency shelf" with non-perishable foods in case you are unable to go to the store due to illness, bad weather, or an emergency. If you have freezer space, you will be able to keep some items here as well. Below are some suggestions for your emergency shelf and your freezer.

Milk Products

  • Skim milk powder
  • Canned evaporated milk
  • UHT milk
  • Cream soups
  • Pasteurized process cheese spread
  • Hard cheese - can be frozen
  • Cocoa for hot chocolate

Meat and Alternatives

  • Canned salmon, tuna, chicken, sardines, ham
  • Canned pork and beans
  • Peanut butter
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Frozen meat, poultry, fish
  • Dried and /or canned lentils and beans

Grain Products

  • Dry whole grain and enriched cereals
  • Crackers, melba toast, crispbreads
  • Macaroni, noodles, spaghetti
  • Rice
  • Frozen perogies
  • Frozen bread, rolls, muffins
  • Biscuit mix
  • Hot cereals (eg. Oatmeal, cream of wheat)

Vegetables and Fruit

  • Frozen vegetables and fruits
  • Canned vegetables (eg. peas, green beans, corn, tomatoes)
  • Canned soups (eg. vegetable, tomato, mushroom)
  • Canned fruit (eg. peaches, pears)
  • Dried fruits (eg. apricots, raisins)
  • Canned or frozen juices

Other foods

  • Coffee and tea
  • Jam and jelly
  • Vegetable oil (may be substituted for butter or margarine in food preparation)
