Did you know?

Community-based organizations that provide direct health services received a 2.3% funding increase in 2008-09.

Each year, thousands of tests and procedures are performed to help identify medical conditions and determine a diagnosis.

A priority for the government is to increase timely access to diagnostic imaging procedures, such as CT scans, MRIs and bone mass density tests.

Investment in diagnostic imaging

Significant funding has been invested to increase the province's diagnostic imaging capacity and ensure patients receive timely service. In 2004-2005, $20 million in federal funding arising from the First Ministers' Meeting was directed to improved diagnostic imaging services. An additional $10.5 million was invested in this area in 2005-2006, and again in 2006-2007. The funding has been used in part to:
  • increase MRI operating hours into evenings and weekends;
  • purchase a new MRI for Regina and plan a new MRI for Saskatoon;
  • begin replacement of an MRI in Saskatoon;
  • purchase new CT scanners for Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Yorkton, North Battleford and Lloydminster;
  • replace CT scanners in Regina (2), Saskatoon and Prince Albert;
  • upgrade the cardiac catheterization lab in Saskatoon;
  • replace aging and inefficient diagnostic imaging equipment;
  • develop radiology information technology; and
  • set up a Diagnostic Imaging Network to create a provincial plan for services.
