The Athabasca Health Authority was established under The Non-profit Corporations Act, 1995. The members are appointed in accordance with the above Act.

Despite its name, the Athabasca Health Authority is not a regional health authority pursuant to The Regional Health Services Act.

At the same time, however, Saskatchewan Health and the federal government annually enters into a funding agreement with the Athabasca Health Authority for the provision of health services to be provided to those residing in the Athabasca Basin.
