Strategic Direction Aboriginal Health ServicesAboriginal people have unique health needs, and an overall gap exists between the health status of Aboriginal people and that of the non-Aboriginal population. Saskatchewan Health is working in partnership with aboriginal organizations and communities, along with regional health authorities and other health agencies, to improve the health status of First Nations and Métis people. Aboriginal Health BlueprintFirst Ministers and national aboriginal leaders agreed in November 2005 to the goal of closing the gap in health status between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians. The meeting of federal, provincial and aboriginal leaders, held in Kelowna, B.C., concluded with a commitment to take action to improve the health of Aboriginal peoples. Areas of focus include:
The national aboriginal health blueprint was released as a “work in progress” and will lead to the development of plans at the provincial level. Saskatchewan Health will work in collaboration with First Nations and Metis peoples and the federal goverment to develop plans that address the needs of Aboriginal peoples in our province.
Saskatchewan Engagement Report: This report summarizes the discussions that took place at engagement meetings across Saskatchewan and captures the priorities identified by participants for inclusion in the Aboriginal Health Blueprint. It also documents specific concerns, potential solutions, and current “promising” practices for future direction and improvement in areas of health care delivery targeting Aboriginal peoples. First Ministers Meeting - Main Document: First Ministers and National Aboriginal Leaders agree to take immediate action to improve the quality of life for the Aboriginal peoples of Canada in four important area - health, education, housing, and relationships. Saskatchewan Approach Document:The Aboriginal Blueprint - Saskatchewan Approach document is built on the priorities that emerged from provincial blueprint engagement sessions and submissions, and identifies actions that will be undertaken by the Province of Saskatchewan and the federal First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) - Saskatchewan Region in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples. This document was developed as a starting point and does not represent a final blueprint plan for the province. National Aboriginal BlueprintFirst Ministers and aboriginal leaders agreed in September 2004 to work together to develop an aboriginal health blueprint. The blueprint document was considered at the November 2005 meeting of First Ministers and aboriginal leaders and accepted as a “work in progress”.
